Netball Rules and Regulations:
Basics:
The aim of netball is to score more goals than the opponent. To
score a goal either the “goal shooter” or “goal attack” must make a successful
shot into the opponents ring. A game is cut into 4 quarters lasting between 7-
15 minutes depending on the age group playing. A team consists of 7 players,
each player having their own position on the court.
The Court:
The netball court is exactly 30.5 metres long and 15.25 metres wide.
The court is divided into thirds and at each end of the court there is a hoop.
The hoop stands 3.05 metres high and is surrounded by a goal circle. In the
centre of the court there is a centre circle, which is the place where the game
starts.
Basic Rules:
Stepping and Footwork Rules:
When a player is in possession of the ball they are only allowed to take 1.5 steps. The foot that you land on first is not allowed to move off the ground. If this rule is broken it is called stepping and the opponents team is rewarded a free pass.
Holding the Ball:
When a player is in possession of the ball they can only hold it for 3 seconds. If the player does not get rid of the ball after this time a free pass is rewarded to the other team.
Contact:
Contact of any kind is not allowed in netball. Whether it be accidental or deliberate it is not allowed. A player cannot push, shove, trip, hold or lean on their opponent. If this occurs the umpire will award the opponent with a penalty pass.
Obstruction:
A player must be 3 feet away when defending their opponent. This distance is measured from your first landing foot and if you are any closer a penalty pass will be awarded to the other team. Obstruction applies whenever your arms are outstretched and if you are not 3 feet away from your player when this occurs it is known as Obstruction.
Throw In:
The last person who touches the ball when it goes out of court is penalised and the opposing takes the thrown in. When taking thrown in, players feet must me behind the line. If any part of their foot is on the line it is known as a foul throw and an opposing thrown in will be rewarded.
Offside:
Each player has a certain position and area which they can go on the court. If any player steps out of this area it is known as offside. If offside is called by the umpire the opposition receives a free pass.
