Netball fans young and old stormed the Telstra Store Whyalla last Wednesday to meet their idol Natalie von Bertouch. The former Australian netball captain smiled for photographs and signed countless numbers of autographs as away of thanks to the locals for their support throughout her career.
Her visit to the city launched the start of a competition giving Telstra customers a chance to win a one-hour long netball training session for a group of 10."It
is so lovely to see the smiles on the girl's faces and I cannot wait to come back in March and be their coach," Natalie said. To enter, Telstra customers are asked to head to the Whyalla Telstra Store, show a copy of their bill and fill out a provided form.
Entries for the competition close on November 24 with the winners to be announced the week after. The clinic will be held at the start of the netball season in March, aiming to give the girls a chance to experience what it is like to train in professional netball. Many who attended on Wednesday came straight from school to the meet-and-greet, starstruck when it was their turn to meet the well known netballer. "She is just my idol and such a good netball player and just amazing,"12-year-old Morgan Skinner said.
"I play netball and she inspires me to play just like her. Rebecca Clifford, 9, had recently travelled to Whyalla from Kimberley with her mother and could not stop smiling after her photo opportunity. "She is really great at netball and she seemed like a really nice person," she said.
Natalie's visit was a way to thank her supporters, as netball's high popularity in Whyalla leads to constant travel from locals to Adelaide to watch professional netball. Instead this time it was Natalie doing the travelling with this tour seeing her stop in Port Pirie, Kadina and Port Lincoln to meet with the locals.
Following her recent retirement from netball Natalie now works for Obesity Prevention and Lifestyle (OPAL) in Adelaide encouraging public physical movement and health.
